From what you explain it is about seeing the bigger picture on the course. Plus the notion of standing on through a header at the windward mark makes sense to get to the layline. How many times have I got close to the windward mark only to curse the fact I was being lifted and getting no closer to going round it.
The compass is coming out tomorrow! - though not sure how useful it will be on Galveston Bay, but we will see...Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07696001626754086580noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-743510240401399331.post-34873658776053840762012-09-06T10:16:16.055-07:002012-09-06T10:16:16.055-07:00Thanks MJ.

In fact, Rodney Pattisson (GBR) was apparently the only FD sailor to understand it at the 1972 Olympics and he won the gold medal.

Briefly, what I normally do is sail the competition with a pinch of anticipating a shift. In other words, stay on the correct side of the person or group I'm trying to beat rather than rely 100% on the compass. That way, if the shift is persistent and does not come back, I'm not hung out to dry on the wrong side.

Persistent shifts is one of my favorite subjects because they occur a lot more than people realize. I need to write this up in more detail.
Doug / Pamhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05161131921177367663noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-743510240401399331.post-91483149159107075592012-09-06T09:03:45.681-07:002012-09-06T09:03:45.681-07:00Excellent post again Doug. For example, when the median is changing throughout a race (or day of racing) or when you don't have time before the race to get enough data?MJnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-743510240401399331.post-90964310066213297922012-09-06T05:05:26.752-07:002012-09-06T05:05:26.752-07:00The best not might need a compass however it sure ...The best not might need a compass however it sure makes life easier at times.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-743510240401399331.post-3512257203152845672012-09-05T21:00:17.631-07:002012-09-05T21:00:17.631-07:00Just make sure you get one with nice big numbers!Just make sure you get one with nice big numbers!Doug / Pamhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05161131921177367663noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-743510240401399331.post-50092529796249075742012-09-05T20:58:41.849-07:002012-09-05T20:58:41.849-07:00You're welcome... we're all still learning...You're welcome... we're all still learning.Doug / Pamhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05161131921177367663noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-743510240401399331.post-18153063070998764992012-09-05T20:57:20.465-07:002012-09-05T20:57:20.465-07:00Thanks Dennis.

My favorite is the competition because until 2 years ago, I really could not see the compass or the course.

With my new vision I now have a choice, but my favorite is still sailing the competition. It's all about what I call "sailing angles" which will be in another post that is almost ready.Doug / Pamhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05161131921177367663noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-743510240401399331.post-56782555100907377122012-09-05T20:46:28.209-07:002012-09-05T20:46:28.209-07:00I assume that it's because of cost. You can put a young sailor into a used Butterfly for about $300 and a fancy compass would double the cost.

It's interesting that beginners do not use compasses and the best of the best do not need compasses.Doug / Pamhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05161131921177367663noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-743510240401399331.post-53955615829186505152012-09-05T19:04:57.202-07:002012-09-05T19:04:57.202-07:00Great post Doug.
